Data Garden Quartet at Bartram’s Garden April 20-21

https://www.facebook.com/events/358583687579150/

What is the creative force of the Universe? Is the force that inspires a human to write poetry or music the same as that which inspires a plant to grow in a particular way? Data Garden will explore this idea and more through QUARTET, an audio installation that gives plants the tools to play digital synthesizers.
Guests will be encouraged to accompany four large tropical plants fitted with specialized electronic sensors. The physiology of these living specimens will be converted into data by a computer. That data will then be translated into commands used to generate quadraphonic audio compositions in real time.

PLANT SONIFICATION WORKSHOP April 21, 11AM-1:30PM
Limited to 25. RSVP to Leslie Gale at lgale@bartramsgarden.org
Participants will leave with an understanding of how to graph real-time data streams from the metabolic processes of plants for use in creating generative electronic music. Individuals with basic experience in electronics, visual programming languages like Pure Data and Max MSP as well as digital audio workstations like Ableton Live will get the most from this workshop though all are welcome. Efforts will be made to pair up participants who have complementary skill sets.

Super Secret Agent Secret Message

This is an old telephone which I modified for Anja Gudic.  Here a small sampler (Saw 30 second) has been setup to play when the telephone reciever is lifted.  The speaker output has been connected through the handset to an earphone speaker.  The 30 second sample plays as a one-shot.

Electricity for Progress at Temple Contemporary for their Thanksgiving Party 11/19/2012

Today we experienced a total of 8 apples!  Between an LM709 opamp in self oscillation and a 555 timer set as a monoastable vibrator (psychogalvanometer) guests were able to interact with and listen in on a variety of ‘touch’ and proximity sensitive circuits.

As an experiment in streaming and remote live sound sources; Eugene Lew, Eric Carbonara, Brooke Sietinsons, and I provided a dynamic exploration of environments and the sounds that accompany them.

On Tuesday 5/22 Electricity for Progress will be presenting ‘Alternative Interfaces’. We will explore modified and custom circuits being used as ‘effects’. Accompanied by Geoff Bucknam, we will run guitar signal through 1.) the apple distortion, 2.) an open-face modified pedal 3.) the Barbie Karaoke Machine.

Human interaction with musical audio effects can to be limited to knobs and stomp switches. By using extended objects, like hands and apples, we will present alternative interfaces for making, controlling, and modifying sound. Have no fear, there will be ample knobs and switches on hand as well!

Please join us on Tuesday 5/22 at Highwire Gallery in Fishtown, 7:30p, $6 https://www.facebook.com/events/376131412430851/
